Given short notice of the opportunity to film a team looking to both win the Race Across America, and also break the record for the fastest time, and then subsequently finding out the story behind this effort, I moved quickly to make sure we could cover it, shape the output, work with sponsors and brand partners, shoot back story and secure a broadcaster, before the imminent start date of this famous race.
Hustle is one word for it.
Building and leading a team, including 2 embedded film makers, separate pre and post race shoot teams and remote production and editorial support, we balanced an already tough logistical challenge of moving a team day & night, across the continental USA in 7 days by road, with the editorial and brand needs of all involved. At once we needed to both respect the athletes needs in order that they could perform in the moment, and bring the story to life by documenting the highs and lows, and encapsulating the jeopardy of the race.
Importantly I brought together film makers with action sports as their bread and butter, with a DoP from Last Chance U, an edit producer from Drive to Survive and personally working closely with the athletes themselves to gain an insight into the key story beats.
A beautiful hour of pain and jeopardy, set against the landscape of the ever changing continental US was the outcome, which we delivered to Outside.TV for broadcast.
